Raising a family
Assalamualaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,
Bismillah Hirrahmanir Raheem.
Allahuma Sali'ala sayidina Muhammadin nabiyil ummi wa 'Ala ali wa sahbihi wa salim.
I bear witness and testimony that there is no other God except Allah and that Muhammad Ibni Abdullah, Salallahu Alaihi Wassalam(peace and blessings of Allah upon him) is His Prophet and Final Messenger.
There is no doubt that the family is the nucleus of society, it requires great care in order to ensure its welfare. This can be achieved by taking the right preparatory steps in terms of seeking the right spouse, or the parent to be in accordance with Prophetic instructions.
The warning of the Prophet Sallalahu Alaihi Wassalam:
" If a suitor, whose faith and conduct you are satisfied with comes to you, marry him your daughter. If you do not, there will be affliction on earth and gross corruption."
One may wonder how could affliction and corruption ensue on a universal scale from an affair which involves only two people. This would be a valid question to be asked by those who look at marriage from a narrow perspective. This matrimonial union which involves a couple, constitutes the core of society. Its state of affairs is reflected on the society positively or negatively.
A pious couple provides pious offspring with the Will of Allah. Were every guardian to insist on choosing a committed spouse, all the non-committed people would have no choice but to be good Muslims, otherwise they would not find any family to associate with them. But unfortunately, in today's society, wealth, lineage, social status and similar factors top the priority list for marriage.
As for the affliction and corruption mentioned in the above hadeeth; they are the direct result of marraiges of non-committed Muslims, who are not keen on raising children according to Islamic standards. We know children learn more by example than by words.
No-one amongst us would declare that we are non-committed Muslims, yet we teach and show our children actions and words of non-committed Muslims. This contradicts our Islamic teachings and drives children to confusion and away from us. The result is there are increasing non-committed Muslims and so affliction and corruption are rampant.
It gives parents great pleasure to see their children as good Muslims and adhering to the Right Path, even better than themselves. Similarly, they would be most miserable to see them corrupted and wretched. Thus, one must take great care of his children and seek all means that help them provide society with God-conscious members.
The first and foremost means is to ask Allah Azza Wa Jalla by supplicating to Him earnestly:
"O our Rubb(Lord), grant us from our spouses and posterity, a source of pleasure and make usfollow those before us, so that we become an example for those who will come after us."
May Allah guide and protect us , May He bless us with knowledge that benefits us, May he bless us with the Taufik to understand and implement that knowledge into our daily lives and May He guide and bless us all. Amin Ya Rabbal Alameen.

I am curious to know if you had any information to clarify what the quran and hadith teaches a Muslim parent to do when a child of their's decides that he/she does not believe in religion and denies the existence of a personal god and refuses to have any religious faith. Other than that, they are neither wretched nor are they bad people.
